Transperineal Biopsy – a Safer More Precise Prostate Biopsy?

Howard Wolinsky is a Chicago-based medical freelancer with over 50 years of experience as a medical journalist writing for the Suntimes, MedPageHealth.com, and European Molecular Biology Reports. He was diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer in 2010 and shares news and views on active surveillance as editor of the Substack newsletter, TheActiveSurveillor.com.

On March 23rd, 2023 , Medscape published his article titled Death Spurs Country’s Shift to Safer Prostate Biopsies that details the importance of a shift from transrectal to transperineal biopsies for the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate cancer.

He highlights this need based on the emergence of new data presented at the European Association of Urology (EAU) 2023 Congress in Milan that demonstrated a near disappearance of severe infections, sepsis, and death when using a transperineal biopsy approach.
